Stanley Kubrick first asked for a classical score to composer Alex North for his movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". But, after several private screenings, Kubrick opted for this mix of contemporary and classical music we all know now. The only discordant fact about this score is that György Ligeti sued Kubrick for alterations of his track "Adventures" and won the case. On this special edition you will find the unaltered full-length version of the original, nearly theatrical vocal happening. On the other hand, Alex North recently recorded his own unused version of "2001" and it's now available to general public. From the theme of "2001" to the haunting, scary chants composed by Ligeti, this soundtrack is, by far, one of the most original I have ever heard. We don't do this anymore, unfortunately. Today, they might have asked the Baha Men or Celine Dion to do the soundtrack (imagine Celine Dion singing her love in an astronaut suite?). The waltz are beautiful. The Gayane Ballet Suite is a tragic composition, later re-used in part by James Cameron in "Aliens" as a tribute. But the Ligeti chants are really the most captivating moments of the score. Impossible not to be scared, or hypnotized by them.
